Inseparable from the vibrant heart essence of kindness, compassion, joy and equanimity, another poetic reference expressing these immeasurable human qualities is phrased in the activity of ‘flying white’. My Japanese sensei (teacher, master of the art-form) told me, “It is not the brushstroke that is most important. It is how the stroke enlivens the space of the paper”. I learned from him that this cannot be controlled. Yet, it must be informed, imbued with honesty. Only then ‘flying white’ might possibly occur.
